Layover in Japan -Anamori Inari Shrine
This summer I visited my parents in Pasadena, California! But the direct flights from Seoul were quite pricey. So I went with the cheapest ticket I found, which had a 7 hour layover in Japan.
At first I was reluctant to make an escapade out of the airport for that time, but I ended up making an airplane buddy on the flight from Incheon to Haneda airport, so we both ventured to Anamori Inari Shrine in Ota City!
The Shrine is only 2 stops away from Haneda Airport on the Keikyuu line. I feel that it was a great find, it is a Shinto Shrine dedicated to foxes - what’s not to like???
I love getting inspiration from what I see in real life, and I am very attracted to old / ancient / folk art from all cultures. So seeing all the fox sculptures and figurines was a real treat for me.
Below are some pics of the Shrine!
I loved seeing all of the different iterations of fox figurines and statues. I was particularly taken with the sculptures that included a baby fox and a grown fox, or a fox sort of balancing a paw on a ball, or hovering their paw over what appears to be a pot.
So I put a moodboard together and got to painting!
Here is my version of a Japanese Fox inspired by the Shrine!
Here is my fox! I used watercolor paper and Holbein acryla gouache. If you want to see my whole process and clips of the shrine you can check it out on youtube by clicking the button below!
